Strawberry Watermelon Agua Fresca

Agua Fresca de Sandia con Fresa

Strawberry Watermelon Agua Fresca
Strawberry Watermelon

I love making strawberry watermelon agua fresca! It's so refreshing and perfect for a hot summer day. The combination of sweet watermelon and tart strawberries is simply irresistible. I like adding a little lime juice and some mint leaves for an extra flavor. It's also a great way to stay hydrated without all the added sugar of other drinks. Give it a try, and you won't be disappointed!

How to pick a sweet, ripe watermelon? The way my dad taught me was by tapping the watermelon. If there is a hollow sound, it is grown and juicy and at the peak of its ripeness. Another way is by the color of the watermelon. The green stripes should be a deep, dark green, while the lighter lines should be a creamy light yellow. Therefore, choose a watermelon with duller colors; the ones with a shiny finish are likely not ripe. Also, check the end of the watermelon. This spot should be small; the smaller the spot, the riper the watermelon. If you have other suggestions on how to pick a ripe watermelon, share in the comments.

Sweet Ripened Strawberries

Ripe, sweet strawberries are much easier to pick. The brighter the color, the sweeter the strawberry. Pick ones that are vibrant in color with minimal discoloration around the stem. If whiteness exists around the stem, the berries were harvested before they ripened.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Medium Watermelon
  • 1 Lb Sweet Ripe Strawberries
  • 5-6 Cups of Water or Sparkling Water
  • Sugar or a sugar-free sweetener of your choice ( I used two .08 oz Crystal Light strawberry flavored drink mix)

NOTE: The amount of sweetener you use can vary depending on the sweetness of the watermelon and strawberries)

Instructions:

  1. Place the strawberries in a large bowl and fill with enough water to cover the strawberries. Add two tbsp of vinegar, stir, and leave them soaking in the water for 15 minutes. Drain out the water and rinse them with clean water. Trim the stems and cut 3/4 of the strawberries in half; reserve the remainder of the berries for garnishing the drinks.
  2. Rinse the outer part of the watermelon with warm water. To prepare the agua fresca, we only need half of a medium watermelon. Peel and cut half of the watermelon, cover the other half with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. Blend the chopped watermelon with two cups of water until smooth. To have bits of watermelon in the agua fresca, pulse a couple of times, then pour it into a pitcher.
  3. Blend the chopped strawberries with three cups of water and the sweetener of choice. Blend until smooth, then mix it in with the blended watermelon. You can also strain it in to remove the seeds. Mix, taste, and add more sweetener if needed. Refrigerate until it's ready to use. Serve with bits of watermelon, slices of strawberries, and lots of ice.
  4. Enjoy!

¡Pruébalo y no te decepcionará

  4. Disfruta

    Tacos Envenenados - Poisoned Tacos

Yes, you read the title correctly! These simple but tasty tacos originated back in the early 1950s. Don Lauro from Zacatecas, Mexico (where I was born), first began selling his tacos in the streets of Zacatecas. Each time he was asked what was in the tacos, he would simply reply, Veneno, which translates to poison. My mom made these for us, but her recipe was a little different. Let me know what you think if you decide to make them.

    Discada for Tacos

Discada is a plate typically made on a large, concave metal disc called a disco. It's a very versatile dish prepared with different cuts of meat which usually consists of chicken, beef, pork, chorizo, ham, hot dogs, and veggies. The perfect dish to prepare for tailgating, birthdays, or any other occasion when you have a large crowd to feed. I especially enjoy this dish because the ingredients are never the same, and it can be prepared with ingredients you already have on hand. Add or take away ingredients to make it as unique to your taste and needs.
